Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from DC. There is no need for students to have a car in DC since the Washington Metro is an excellent form of transportation (plus parking in DC is extremely expensive). So, typically, students fly down to Washington or have their family drive them. During the speaker portion of the program, students are required to take the Metro, and most continue to do so during their internship.
Students will purchase a SmarTrip card for $2, and load the balance as they see fit. As you travel on the metro, you swipe your card and the balance detracts according to the fare cost. These cards are available for purchase online or you can get a card at any metro station in Washington. To find out more about fare costs and DC transportation on the Metro, visit their website.
