Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor recently released a segment of Watters’ World where Jesse Watters went into Chinatown in an attempt to figure out how people in China are viewing this years election. From the very beginning key elements of Asian American stereotypes and racism are evident. First, in thinking that Chinatown New York would be an accurate representation of China, Watters displayed an example of homogenization that is seen throughout the entire clip. He goes on to ask if China can take care of North Korea for us, makes a joke about karate, and has oriental music playing throughout. All three of these demonstrate the lack of knowledge Watters has about the differences in people from China and those from other Asian countries. In addition to the homogenization, the myth of the model minority is brought up towards the end. Watters and O’Reilly are having a discussion about why the elderly participants who clearly do not speak english are not walking away, and it is mentioned that they are such a patient people, playing into the model minority myth. Finally, the constant mockery and examples of oriental thinking are just further reminders of the stereotypes about Asian Americans that take place in today’s America.
