Let’s take back to 100 years ago. In Chinese history, everything never stop changing, such as politics, economics, cultures and so on. Women’s beauty also has had a dramatic change. Specifically, in the field of beauty, every decades has its own standard when people search and define the concept “beauty”, which implies that beauty has been influenced by the combination of Chinese polity and economy, and also influenced by the culture from European and American nations.
From the collapse of Qing Dynasty, 1910s, to 1949, when People’s Republic of China started to establish and develop, the beauty in China included the western style because of the capitalism and the land of “rent” for western citizens, like Shanghai. The beauty started to be modernize and more western. For example, in 1940s, hairstyles from the video clip above vividly shows that the mainstream hairstyle imitated the American style.
In my opinion, the US declared the war after invasion of Japanese Army, and China was still having a war with Japan, so that American-imitated hairstyle got popular in China. In some ways, the hairstyle shows the motivation of stopping the war with Japan and pushing Japanese back to Japan, like what the United States was doing the same.
This 100 years, China had changed the status from a poor, closing country to a force-opened country and even to a country which likes making connection with all over the world. The beauty in China is also becoming more and more modernizing by combining western styles and developing in Asian styles at the same time. This is why I am proud of being a Chinese citizen.
