In this video from Comedy Central, Ronny Chieng shows a clip from Fox News. They counted that “China” was said twelve times during a presidential debate and with that small bit of information, Fox News decided to interview Chinese-Americans about their political views in Chinatown. The selected interviewees spoke little to no English and the whole segment was made to mock those citizens. Chieng then went to Chinatown himself and spoke Chinese to a handful of citizens and they all had significant things to say about either candidate.
This segment on Comedy Central is significant in relation to the themes discussed in class because it relates to the concept of perpetual foreigner. No matter how long or for how many generations those people in Chinatown have lived in the US, Fox News still saw them as a foreigner because they do not speak English. As one interviewee put it, “This is not the America I recognize”. The Chinese-Americans are mistreated and misrepresented because they are seen as a perpetual foreigner and when a major news network treats a group like that it won’t get better any time soon.
