Begun in the fall Semester of 2000, the East McMicken Avenue Renovation involved the interior design alteration of a two-room flat. Beginning with the process of documenting the existing conditions of the building, the students of the Over-the-Rhine DesignBuild Studio opted to transform the unit into a one-room efficiency with an adjacent bathroom. The decision involved extensive alteration to the existing kitchen and bathroom but opened up the small space dramatically. Students handled the production of construction documents for permit approval as well as all aspects of the construction process. The East McMicken Avenue Renovation progressed concurrently with the nearby East 13th Street Renovation and was competed for occupancy by the end of the 2002 Spring Semester. The building was then purchased by Cincinnati Public Schools to provide for the future expansion of Rothenburg Preparatory Academy, and is currently uninhabited.
